American Flag Picture Frame: Tutorial

If you haven't figured it out yet or are a new follower (hi!!) I am decorating Harrison's baby room with an Americana theme.

I found the cutest picture frame (and have seemed to misplace the link) of an American Flag and the cost was roughly $58. Yeah, for a small 4"x6" picture frame. Crazy, I know.

Being my frugal self with home decoration I decided to attempt the project myself.

This is what you need...

Materials
:: small and large paint brush ::
:: any size picture frame ::
:: red, white, and blue paint ::
:: sanding paper ::

[STEP ONE] Paint the entire picture frame (including sides) with white paint.

:: Yes, I painted the back first, oops. ::

[STEP TWO] Allow this to dry for a few hours and then paint one of the corners blue.

[STEP THREE] Add several red stripes to the picture frame.

[STEP FOUR] Paint several white stars on the blue corner.

[STEP FIVE] Sand the edges and the flag to give it a vintage look.

This was a very simple project. I am a terrible painter (as you can see in the oh so straight lines!) - this was my first attempt trying to make art with paint. I think the imperfections make it unique and it would look too harsh being perfect - At least I'll keep telling myself that!

Breakdown in cost
Frame: $2.99 (on sale!!!)
Paint: already had but they run around $2/a pop
Brushes: already had

I spent a total of $2.99 + tax for this project. It has the same impact as the one I saw for $58+shipping.

Yes to another inexpensive accessory!

  3. I love it!!! I have started on my patriotic crafts for upcoming holidays but also for my hubby's promotion dinner/party. He is in the Navy. A frame like this would be the perfect addition. This room is going to be so good! Can't wait to see it all together.
